My Epilepsy, My Voice
This section of our site allows young adults to promote personal self-expression and share their journey of living life as a young adults with epilepsy or seizure disorder. We are happy to show our support to Allison Wright as she gives us a "snap shot" of her story.
At the age of 4, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. By age 10, I knew I wanted to be a physician assistant who helped patients with seizures of their own. Today, I am writing as the only physician assistant I know of with epilepsy. Now, I am sure that there are many medical providers, lawyers, managers, and other professionals in high-powered jobs that do not mention their epilepsy. While 1/26 people develop the condition, far less will talk about it, and many people such as myself, are often too scared to tell our patients and superiors because we fear that they may assume that our seizures deem us incompetent.
As a child and as a patient, I do not remember meeting a person in the medical field with epilepsy. That person, had I met them, would be my role model. I hope to be a role model for others with epilepsy. I want to show them that it is not only possible to live with an epilepsy diagnosis but thrive.
